Wausau will become the first city in Marathon County to adopt a public-intoxication ordinance, the City Council decided unanimously Tuesday.

The ordinance is the third and final step, for now, in a three-pronged plan to discourage a group of about 20 park patrons who repetitively get drunk and cause disturbances, especially at The 400 Block and Big Bull Falls Park, 204 W. Scott St.

The ordinance will allow the city to fine people who are visibly heavily intoxicated or incapacitated and also causing a public nuisance $150, and $300 plus court fees for subsequent offenses. ...
