Question: What are the laws when driving in a school zone?

Answer: While passing a school, the speed limit is 15 mph. This speed limit is in effect anytime children are going to or from school or are playing within the sidewalk area around the school. Additionally, when you pass an officially designated "school crossing," the speed limit is 15 mph when any child is present or a school crossing guard is present.

School crossing guards are posted at 12 major school zone crossings throughout the city, and they wear bright yellow vests or jackets. When a school crossing guard enters the crosswalk with a stop sign visible, traffic is required, by law, to stop. Failure to stop for an adult school crossing guard can result in a traffic citation with a fine amount of more than $100.

With the start of a new school year, officers from the Wausau Police Department will be actively patrolling and monitoring school zones to ensure the safety of the children going to and from school. Fines for any moving violation that occur in a school zone are doubled.

The Wausau Police Department asks all of the motoring public to be cognizant of school zones and to please slow down and drive with extra caution when traveling through a school zone or school crossing.
