Letter: People will just go 75 mph if we raise speed limit to 70 mph

No common sense in raising speed limit

EDITOR: There is no question about the correlation of speed with accidents. To raise the highway speed limit to 70 mph will simply increase the speed drivers will use. If they are going at 70 mph now - and it seems 90 percent of cars do - they will simply go 75 mph or more when the limit is raised.

The best thing to control accidents and highway deaths is to lower the speed limit to 60 mph.

Common sense seems to have disappeared regarding safety on our highways. Increased enforcement is another major safety factor. Let's be realistic about what an increase in the speed limit would do.
