Appleton leaders defend department's response to men carrying assault rifles

Mayor Tim Hanna said Friday extra police officers will be at the downtown farmers market today amid a furor surrounding two men who carried assault rifles on College Avenue last Saturday.

Police detained the men, who were legally carrying AR-15 rifles on their backs near the market.

Hanna said the cherished weekly event, which draws thousands of people to the avenue, will not be "ruined by two idiots trying to prove a point" and said he would be there today for coffee and breakfast. ...
