American Red Cross lifeguard training held at Y

The Oshkosh Community YMCA will offer the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course for individuals 15 years and older. The course will be held at the Downtown Y on Oct. 12-13 and 19-20. Lifeguard training is a great skill to have. In order to successfully pass this course, you will need to pass a practical and written test with 80 percent or better. Certifications include American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED.

This class does require passing some prerequisite water skills prior to entry. Prerequisites: Swim 300 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order: (100 yards front crawl using rhythmic breathing, 100 yards breaststroke using correct kick, pull, glide form, 100 yards either front crawl or breaststroke or a combination of the two strokes). Swim 20 yards using front drawl or breaststroke, surface dive to 9 feet, retrieve a 10 pound brick, swim 20 yards to starting point with object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps in 1 minute 40 seconds and 2 minutes tread water without hand. Prescreening will be held the first day of class. Participants will be refunded the cost of the class if they do not pass the prerequisites.

Participants should bring ID to verify age the first day of class. Books are included in the fees. The cost of the course is $175/Y Member and $200/Activity Member.
