The Wisconsin Rapids City Council will hold a special meeting at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, to consider a unanimous recommendation from the Citizen Advisory Committee to apply for a grant that would help the city buy run-down properties downtown, fix them up and market them to developers.

Wisconsin Rapids city staff members submitted an application late Friday afternoon on the city's behalf for federal funds to help boost local economic development.

After about three weeks worth of work, which culminated Friday with a special City Council meeting to approve the last-minute application, Adam Tegen, the city's planning and economic development director, dropped the application materials off at the post office shortly after 4 p.m., just in time to be postmarked by the 5 p.m. deadline.
