Religious officials ask Menasha mayor to rescind taxes

Religious leaders from around the Fox Cities gathered outside City Hall on Friday with a message for Mayor Don Merkes: Fix your mistake.

The situation started in August 2012, when leaders of the Sikh Temple of the Fox Valley received a delinquent tax notice for nearly $9,000 in unpaid property taxes from 2011. Dr. Kamaljit Paul, chair of the temple's board of trustees, said he called the city treasurer, who directed him to the city administration offices, which sent him to the city assessor.
