Matt Ferris threw for a state record eight touchdowns on Friday to lead Xavier to a 64-14 win over Ripon at Rocky Bleier Field in Appleton.

Ferris set the mark in the third quarter, breaking the mark of seven held by several players, most recently Brett Kasper of Two Rivers in 2012.

The Hawks led 32-14 early in the third quarter, but Ferris threw three touchdowns in the quarter to break open the game. He finished with 420 yards passing on 24-of-36 passing. He was intercepted once.

"The evolution of the mind, body and soul," Xavier coach Dave Hinkens said of Ferris development. "He has grown physically and, because he's a student of the game, he's not going to be outworked in his prep time. That's translating into a kid that has experience on how to run our offense, but taking it to a whole new level because of how he's preparing."

Ferris has 28 touchdowns this season and has been intercepted just twice. The state record for touchdowns in a season is 40, set by Kenosha St. Joseph's Danny Freund in 2003.

"It's through five games, but he hasn't played in the fourth quarter of a game this season," Hinkens said. "He has total control of the plays we send in. We send in three plays and he selects from those three. He identifies where he wants to go and, because of his prep time, he's making great decisions and executing those decisions.

"As coaches, the biggest thing we need to do is give him the ball and try to maximize the possessions our offense has. We want to recreate the feeling of (college powerhouse) Oregon on the high school field."

The Hawks did just that as Ferris hit Dan Reinhardt for a 46-yard score in the first quarter. He threw three second-quarter touchdowns and the Hawks led 26-6 at halftime.

Ferris directed Xavier to 26 third-quarter points to give the Hawks a 52-14 advantage. Xavier's ground game took over from there as Zach Simons and Spencer Jankowski added TD runs of 33 and seven yards, respectively.

Xavier outgained the Tigers 603 yards to 220, including 183 rushing. Simons led the Hawks' rushing attack with 64 yards on three carries.
