Faith perspective: Syria question raises issue of a just war

In the current debate over what to do, if anything, about the situation in Syria, I thought it might be helpful to look, albeit briefly, at the Western and Christian tradition around just war. At the moment, we've been given a bit of breathing space as the diplomatic effort moves forward.

No one doubts that a diplomatic solution would be a godsend. How does a nation decide for or against war or even intervention? Right now, it seems that the majority of Americans are basing their decisions on a combination of fatigue and the desire for isolation that is a result of that fatigue.
