Longtime letter writer, volunteer Irene Schlueter dies at 101

Irene Schlueter, who died on Sept. 17 at 101 years old, was well-known in the community as a hard worker and caring volunteer.

She also was a beloved local gadfly and letter writer to Daily Herald Media for many years. She had opinions on everything from health care reform to Congressional spending and was not afraid to share them.

Marathon County Board member Joanne Leonard said she looked to Schlueter as a role model who taught her how to be a leader. The two met while volunteering at the Wausau Hospital shortly after Leonard moved to Wausau in 1969. ...
