"Wyatt's Woods," the most recent offering from author Harold Thorpe, is a heartwarming tale of a boy and his adventures in the woods of Door County.

"The inspiration for this most recent book, Wyatt's Woods, was my young grandson and the woods surrounding our family cabin in Door County," said Thorpe, who grew up in southwestern Wisconsin and now lives in Butte des Morts. "The cabin is a haven for my family, bringing three generations together under a canopy of trees."

Thorpe earned an education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Upon graduation, he worked in education as a special education teacher and a school psychologist. During these years Thorpe also started a business and earned a master's degree in educational psychology from UW-Madison and a doctorate degree in education from Utah State University. For the next 25 years Harold taught classes, supervised student teachers and served in various administrative positions.

Already an experienced nonfiction journal article writer, upon retirement he decided to switch to fiction. He recently published "Giddyap Tin Lizzie," the first book in an adult epic series, and will soon release "BitterSweet Harvest," the second book in that series.

"Wyatt's Woods" is his first children's book, but fans should watch for "Aubrey's Attic," "Grayson's Garage" and "Bellamy's Ball," three more children's books to be released in the near future.

Thorpe plans to offer book signings at the following Door County locations this fall:

? Novel Ideas, Baileys Harbor, 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 29.

? Child's Play, Sturgeon Bay, 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 12.

? Book World, Sturgeon Bay, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 19.

The book is available at each of those stores and also Jacksonport Craft Cottage in Jacksonport, and Blue Willow in Sister Bay.
