I've told this story a time or two over the years, about falling off the cliff on a family vacation when I was 8 or 9 years old. The cliff taught me something about fear and taking risks.

In a pine forest along Lake Champlain in Vermont, I lost my footing and suddenly found myself clinging to the side of a steep embankment. A rocky beach lay somewhere below.

My two brothers stretched with their hands, then long sticks, but they couldn't reach me. The soil was little more than a bed of old pine needles - nothing firm to grab - and I began slowly sliding down. ...
