As the commander of the VFW Department of Wisconsin and a veteran of our military action in Bosnia, it's important to me and my fellow veterans to recognize National Mesothelioma Day.

Mesothelioma is a horrible form of cancer that arises from exposure to asbestos. Many Wisconsinites were exposed to asbestos while serving our country or working in Wisconsin factories, mills and foundries.

It's startling to know the high percentage of veterans who have been killed by asbestos. According to Military.com, veterans represent 8 percent of the nation's population, but they comprise an ...
