GREEN BAY - A pier supporting the Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge sank 22 to 27 inches, forcing Wednesday's closure, but the bridge appears stable, state Department of Transportation officials said Thursday.

A day after the span had to be closed when a portion of the bridge sagged about 1 feet, DOT officials held a new conference to release investigation details. Based on reports from drivers, investigators believe the event happened relatively quickly, probably within a few hours early Wednesday morning. The sinking pier caused cracks in the soil near the bridge.
