Letters to the editor: Sen. Johnson ignores facts on global warming

5:18 PM, Sep. 30, 2013  |  Comments

This column has had some letters claiming Sen. (Ron) Johnson is correct - that we do not have global climate change, or global warming. In fact one writer even asserts, without fact or reason, that the earth has cooled within the last ten years. Really? Here are some facts taken from NASA's Earth Science Committee Team and The California Institute of Technology:

Levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are sky-rocketing and have broken all previous records. This is not a normal function as some claim. There are some observations that indicate the rate of carbon dioxide increase has slowed somewhat, but nevertheless continues to rise.

Carbon dioxide and other air pollutants such as methane, trap those parts of the light spectrum that cause global warming.

The earth has gone for thousands of years with some fluctuations in global temperatures. But studies since the 1880's have shown that the earth is warming, at an accelerating rate with warmest temperatures occurring within the last twelve years.

Polar caps are melting, causing a rise in sea level of 6.7 inches in the last century.

It is hard to convince a person of fact, if his living depends upon not believing it. Many corporate leaders, including coal and oil producers, and auto manufacturers, want to keep on selling and using fossil fuels so of course they don't believe in global change. Senator Johnson, who always sides with industrialists, refuses to agree to agree with 97 percent of climate scientists who think the above facts are true. What planet does the senator plan to move on?
