Question: There is a sign on the back of the city bus that reads, "Right turn in front of bus is illegal". What does this mean?

Answer: The sign that you see posted on the back of all city buses is referencing state statute 346.075. This traffic law states,"If the operator of a motor vehicle overtakes a motor bus which is stopped at an intersection on the right side of the roadway and is receiving or discharging passengers, the operator shall pass at a safe distance to the left of the motor bus and shall not turn to the right in front of the motor bus at that intersection."

Basically, the law means that if you are following a bus and it stops at a corner, you cannot pass the bus and make a right hand turn in front of it. The law is meant to protect pedestrians crossing the side street after getting off the bus. Since the bus creates a large blind spot, passing vehicles may be unaware of a pedestrian until it is too late.
