More from McCarthy
Following are the highlights of McCarthyís post-practice press conference on Thursday:
What did you see from Matthews in practice?
Took full allotment of reps, looks good, padded practice, took a step today, weíll see how he is tomorrow. Optimistic, yes. Not a surprise. I knew he was going to do everything he could to play this week.
Why did Hayward practice if heís out?
Part of his rehab. Absolutely a good sign. Making progress.
What do you do at backup center with Van Roten out?
Always work four centers throughout the year. Lang, Sitton, Barclay and Evan Dietrich-Smith.
What about WR Randall Cobb?
Heís off to an excellent start, getting more opportunities. Good football player.
What about the Lionsí defense, which is good on third down?
Best in the league. Starts up front with their pass rush, and they do a good job of covering. Their safety play has really improved.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers bounces back well from bad games. Is he any different in week after he doesnít play well?
Very tough on himself. Heís had a really good week of preparation. Spends a lot of time in the office early in the week. We just want him to be himself.
What do you think of Lions running back Reggie Bush as a receiving threat?
He's a three-down player, thatís a big compliment to a running back. Heís a weapon coming out of the backfield, a primary target.
How has the Packers' pass protection been first three weeks?
The obvious negative stat is the sacks. Our tackles are asked to do more, and our young guys are handling that well. We need to get better, and we want to have a complete game. Stafford only been sacked three times. He's done a good job getting rid of football.
Are the Packers interested in a guy like quarterback Josh Freeman, just released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?
Iím aware whatís going on the in the league. Havenít seen Josh play in a few years, donít have anything to say about that. When I saw him few years ago, I thought he had a bright future.
Are you going to watch the Pirates baseball playoff game tonight? (McCarthy is a Pittsburgh native.)
I donít know. Will see how it works out. Game the other night was unbelievable, something special.
