The Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary have opened their annual essay contest to sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students.

This year's theme is "What Patriotism Means To Me." The essay must be 300 to 400 words long. Contestants cannot identify themselves, their school, city or state within the essay, and their names must not appear on the face of the entry.

There are cash prizes for local winners whose entries will be forwarded to the district competition. The district winner goes on to department or state judging.

Deadline for competition is Nov. 1. Entries can be sent to Audrey I. Tessmer, chairwoman, VFW Auxiliary 388, 1502 Norton St., Wausau WI 54401. For more information, call 715-848-1502.
