Quick tips: Living healthier than your parents

• Quit using tobacco. Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

• Get preventive exams. Adults should visit their doctor from time to time, even if they are healthy. Your doctor will advise the frequency in which you should see them. See your dentist every six months for regular cleanings and checkups.

• Physical activity. Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity (i.e., brisk walking) every week and muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms).

• Make time for fun and relaxation to manage stress.

• Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables at every meal. For a more accurate calculation of how many fruits and vegetables you need, use the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s fruits and vegetable calculator at www.cdc.gov/nutrition/everyone/fruitsvegetables/howmany.html.

• Money matters — grow your emergency or retirement fund.

• Become active in your community by finding what you are passionate about and volunteer for that cause.

• Develop healthy relationships with other people and yourself.
