Childhood obesity has become a hot topic over the last several years and for good reason: The number of obese children has dramatically increased. Recent studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that 17 percent - or 12.5 million - children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 years are obese.

Since 1980, obesity prevalence among children and adolescents has almost tripled.
