Letters to the editor: Proposed recycling fee unfair to taxpayers

4:03 PM, Oct. 6, 2013  |  Comments

Well, here we go again. The taxpayer gets the shaft because the city government doesn't operate the city expenses and income as efficiently as necessary to defray the insignificant $400,000 cost to run the recycling program.

It is insignificant when compared to the millions the city spends to "beautify" certain areas like the river walk, as an example.

Do you remember when they first told us they were going to the cart system for our garbage? We were charged for the cart to help cut costs so there wouldn't be additional taxes to cover this system. Next thing they shove down our throats is the recycling bins and another charge to us for those (black) carts so they wouldn't have to raise the taxes to cover the cost. Now, just like the Federal Government, they want the taxpayers to pay more to cover the same costs. Will it ever stop?

I'm a senior, retired citizen who is living on a fixed income. Our expenses are forever going up to pay for our daily needs. But, our income stays about the same. Perhaps (city manager) Mark Rolhoff should try living like we are forced to live. I don't think he would be throwing money around like he is now.

There are only two people living in our home so we don't have enough recyclables to fill the (small size) cart in a month so we don't even put it out for pick up until it is about full. Why should we pay the same as someone that needs pick up twice a month or more? I am asking the city council to re-examine how they are spending our tax money and it should be easy to find that $400,000. Do not make us tax payers pay another charge or add the costs to our taxes. It is not fair.
