The Green Bay Packers proved they could win last season during the monthlong absence of star linebacker Clay Matthews and will be forced to do it again in the coming weeks.

Matthews had successful surgery on his broken thumb Monday, according to FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer, and ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Packers linebacker would miss about a month.

Matthews injured the thumb on the final play of the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field when he sacked quarterback Matthew Stafford. ...
