Letter: Republican Congress is holding economy hostage

GOP Congress acts like a 3-year-old

EDITOR: An open letter to U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy: Why have you joined the House Republicans to shut the government down? The Affordable Care Act is law. If you want to change the law, introduce legislation, get it passed by both houses of Congress and signed by the president.

The democratic process does not allow engaging in guerilla warfare, holding the entire country hostage until your demands are met if only one house passes the bill. It is petty behavior at best, but with the closure of health programs and clinics, hamstringing research and intelligence operations, it becomes dangerous, putting every citizen at risk.

The Republican refrain is, "Why not sit down and compromise?" President Obama did that in 2011 when the GOP said, "Postpone implementing parts of the ACA and give us a chance to change what we don't like." You and the House GOP have tried and failed 42 times to abolish the ACA. I know of no serious attempts to change it. Having failed for two years, now you say, "Let's compromise. Give us what we want and we will let the federal government operate normally." That is a demand for ransom, not a compromise.

You have now added the debt limit to your demands as you embarrass this country, while pushing it into economic disaster if you do not get your way, demonstrating the tactics and mentality of the average 3-year-old. President Obama agrees both sides need to talk, but not under threat. Congressman, grow up. Do your job!
