Matthews has thumb surgery

Oct. 8, 2013

Clay Matthews had surgery on his broken thumb that will sideline him at least a month.

According to reports on FoxSports and NFL.com, the Packers’ Pro Bowl outside linebacker had the surgery Monday night to repair a Bennett’s fracture, a common injury in which the break occurs at the base of the thumb.

The NFL.com report said the Packers aren’t going to put Matthews on injured reserve designated for return, which would prohibit him from play for at least eight games. That means the Packers think he’ll be back in less than eight weeks.
