Commentary: Demand answers on fire chief agreement

As the saying goes, "Where there's smoke, there's fire." That's often true, and this week there's some disturbing smoke coming out of City Hall about the position of fire chief.

Apparently some on the City Council found themselves at cross purposes with Chief Bill Manis, so last week they and the mayor conveniently decided to make their perceived "problem" go away, by giving him a $23,000 payoff to retire. How nice. Oh, and they then signed a legally binding agreement to keep all other details secret.

Let me be clear, this isn't about Bill Manis. I've known Bill since he was my neighbor over 40 ...
