As the campaign continues to move forward, I have been thinking a lot about why people give to United Way.

To me the answer is simple; we are making our communities a better place, taking care of our friends, family and neighbors in need. My family and I have been giving to United Way for many years because by making a donation we can help, we can make a difference and we can help make someone's future look brighter.

If you have not given this year, ask yourself, "Why?"

? Perhaps you think your income is too low. No gift is too small, and all gifts make a difference. With United Way, all donations are pooled together to make an impact where the needs are the greatest.

? Possibly someone told you not to give. Giving is a personal choice, you have to decide. If you do not see enough compelling reasons here, we would be happy to share more examples with you. If you choose not to give, I challenge you to make that decision on your own, not because someone told you not to.

? Perhaps payroll deduction is not an option for you. We make it easy to give. You can go online to and click "give" to use your debit or credit card. You also can call us at 715-421-0390 to make a pledge and set up quarterly billing. Gifts can remain anonymous if you so choose.

Have you ever considered the impact your donation would have? If you have not given or do not know the impact you make here are some examples of how United Way funds are used:

? There are adults with dementia and Alzheimer's who are institutionalized because their spouses cannot take care of them 24/7. United Way funds help provide respite care to keep those individuals in their homes surrounded by their loved ones.

? There are women who are physically and emotionally abused by their partners, who need a safe place to go with their children. United Way funds help to provide safe shelter.

? There are people who are facing challenges and have no idea where to turn. United Way funds provide 211 information and referral services.

? Handicapped children who have never been able to walk are for the first time able to "use their legs." United Way funds help provide Equine Assisted Therapy to these children.

? Elementary school children have to get themselves off to school because Mom or Dad has to go to work, or they come home to an empty house after school. United Way funds help provide a safe, supervised and enriching environment for kids before and after school.

? There are children who do not eat on the weekends because they do not have food at home. Imagine a child trying to learn on a Monday morning when all they are really concerned about is getting food in their belly/United Way funds help feed these families.

That is only six examples. United Way actually funds 44 programs so I could definitely give you more! Our communities belong to us and our children and our children's children. Our communities will only be as great as we make them, get involved - make a donation today!
