Wisconsin municipalities spent more money on street maintenance after tapping the brakes during the recession, a Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance study found.

The group's recent municipal facts report says communities cut street maintenance costs in 2009 and 2010, but raised spending by 3.8 percent in 2011. The nonpartisan, public policy research organization looked at street maintenance costs - including road maintenance, street lighting, highway administration and sewer - in 243 Wisconsin cities and villages.
