A couple of years ago, an adult woman in her late 20s approached the Marathon County Literacy Council for help with reading because she wanted to be able to get into college to complete a program and get a good job. Her only job at the time was house cleaning for minimal wages. She knew there was something better out there.

However, when we assessed her reading comprehension, she only understood at about a third-grade level. She was out of practice. We matched her with a volunteer tutor who met weekly with the woman for more than two years.
