Commentary: Secrecy most troubling aspect of fire chief 'payoff'

It's been an interesting week. After I pointed out city government's troubling attempt to avoid a problem by making a secret agreement to pay off the fire chief to retire, some at City Hall suggested that I should keep my nose out of their business. Fair enough, that's my goal too.

But, I feel a duty to discuss city matters when those who are elected to deal with city business purposely make every effort possible to inappropriately keep something secret. Some things in city government are appropriate to keep confidential - paying off an employee to retire is definitely not one of them.
