Tackle Derek Sherrod, who broke his leg in two places in a December 2011 game against Kansas City, practiced for the first time this season and is expected to go in pads on Thursday.

He hasnt been in pads since the Kansas City game, said Packers coach Mike McCarthy. He needs to get down there. The individual work will be really good for him. How we integrate him into the team work is something weve talked about.

Were not going to just roll him out there and have him play 55 snaps in pads. I dont think thats really smart with what hes been through and the path he had to take to get to this point. So, we will break him in and push as far as we can. Just be smart.

Sherrod said he is glad to be back on the practice field.

It was very special, Sherrod said. Ive been looking forward to it for a long time and just to have the chance to be out there next to my teammates in the line, out there just having fun with them.

Sherrod said he feels fine physically and is looking forward to practicing in pads.
Its going to be a great time, he said. Im going to go out there, practice hard, just looking forward to knocking a little bit more of the rust off, and getting back out there and having some fun.

Sherrod is confident he can help the Packers this season.

Im definitely going to go out there, push myself and work hard and get back into the rotation and help my team out.
