Second trial averted in 2009 felony murder case (with video)

A 32-year-old Marshfield man who was granted a new trial on charges he murdered his girlfriend has narrowly averted a second trial when he reached a plea deal Thursday with prosecutors.

Eric Mayer faces felony murder charges in Marathon County Circuit Court in connection with the March 2009 death of his girlfriend, 43-year-old Cynthia Tyler of Stratford. Tyler died from a ruptured artery in her brain, according to autopsy results, and suffered severe facial injuries before her death. She was killed at her home, police said.
