Board concerned over karst groundwater contamination

The Kewaunee County Board passed a resolution Oct. 15 in support of exploring land use practices effective in preventing groundwater contamination in shallow karst areas.

The board passed the resolution based on the premise that of 483 wells tested in Kewaunee County since 2004, 30.8 percent or 149 wells were rated as unsafe for human consumption due to bacteria present and/or there are nitrates present that are above the human health standard of 10.0 parts per million.

The tests are performed every spring by the Kewaunee County Land and Water Conservation Department as a basic-level, ...
