Many children have earned their allowances by raking fall leaves over the years; and we have all experienced the feeling of satisfaction that once the leaves have been raked toward the streets, curbs and ditches our part is done. However, in this case, out of sight is not out of mind.

Leaves in the streets and ditches get washed away with the rain and end up in our rivers and lakes, where they can have negative impacts. Leaves can plug inlets and storm sewer pipes and cause flooding, block out much-needed sunlight in rivers and lakes, and add nutrients to the water that lead to algae blooms.
