The Green Bay Packers have added a fresh body to their depleted receiving corps.

The Packers claimed rookie wide receiver Chris Harper off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers on Friday and released running back Michael Hill, a likely sign James Jones won’t play this Sunday against Cleveland.

ESPN’s Bill Williamson was the first to report the Packers placing the claim.

A 6-foot-1, 229-pound receiver out of Kansas State, Harper was taken in the fourth round (123rd overall) of this year’s draft by the Seattle Seahawks, but didn’t make their final roster and started the season on the practice squad.

The 49ers quickly scooped him up and tried to convert him to an ‘H-back’ tight end role before releasing him on Thursday.

The Packers practiced with only three healthy receivers this week – Jordy Nelson, Jarrett Boykin and Myles White, recently promoted from the practice squad. They’d be crossing their fingers Jones might be able to play through his knee sprain, but he didn’t practice all week.

The Packers waived Hill to clear room for Harper, who caught 123 passes for 1,734 yards and 12 touchdowns during his three years at Kansas State after transferring from Oregon.

Hill, 24, signed to the Packers' practice squad after being among the San Diego Chargers' final roster cuts. He was activated last month after injuries to Eddie Lacy and James Starks, playing in two games and fielding one kickoff for 19 yards.

Hill is still practice-squad eligible and could return to the Packers in that capacity if he clears waivers.
