United Way looking for rake-a-thon volunteers

Mary Stanczyk was able to take care of most of her yardwork until a couple of years ago, a notable accomplishment for the 92-year-old Custer resident.

But when she wasn't able to do the work any longer, Stanczyk was grateful to find help through United Way of Portage County on Make a Difference Day, she said.

On Make a Difference Day, the nation's largest day of service, the United Way sends volunteers into the community to rake the lawns of elderly and disabled residents who are unable to do yardwork. Last year, more than 700 volunteers helped raked about 160 yards in Portage County. ...
