Community gardens provide retired teacher with new kind of classroom

Ruth Freye has been working in gardens since she was 4 years old.

"I think I've worked in the gardens every year except when I was going to college and worked in Milwaukee and did some landscape work around those homes," said 90-year-old resident of the Village of Harrison.

When she retired from the Menasha School District, where she taught primary school for 25 years, Freye decided to take gardening classes. She started raising orchids and different kinds of citrus plants and learned new methods of vegetable gardening. She got involved with the Winnebago County Master Gardeners and was ...
