Letter: Four good reasons not to raise speed limit

2:19 PM, Oct. 19, 2013  |  Comments

What is Rep. (Paul) Tittl thinking?

There are at least four good reasons for not raising the current speed limits.

? Speed kills and causes horrible injuries.

? Higher speeds burn more gas.

? Burning more gas causes more pollution

? How many millions of dollars will it cost to make and replace the current speed signs?

Wisconsin is not the only Midwest state with the 65 mph speed limit. Minnesota speed limits are 60 and 65 mph. I know because I have made countless trips north of the Twin Cities over the past 15 years. I have also traveled 65 mph and 58 mph, and going 65 saves me 20 minutes. For a 6 1/2-hour trip, that is a tiny amount of time saved.

But it does give me much better gas mileage and it is safer. I mostly set my speed at 58 and I have never caused a backup of traffic, nor have I ever seen a backup from others going at a slower speed.

It seems that Mr. Tittl does not understand that if people are going to exceed the 65 mph by 5 to 15 mph, they will do the same at the 70 mph limit. And that is bad for any victim of higher speeds.

Gov. Walker has not given his stand on this issue. I hope he is not waiting to see which way the wind blows. Gov. Walker needs to be at the front of this issue. I also wonder why no one from the DOT or Wisconsin State Patrol has spoken up about the dangers of higher speed limits.
