With the recent government shutdown threatening access to the nation's war memorials, concerns that the 95 veterans set to fly to the nation's capital Monday proved unfounded, as event organizers worked behind the scenes to ensure the trip would materialize.

The veterans' collective sigh of relief is all thanks to the efforts of Mike Thompson, co-founder and president of the Never Forgotten Honor Flight organization, who was able to obtain special permits to allow access to the memorials even during the shutdown, which ended late last week.
