In just two days thousands of people across the nation will make a difference in the lives of their friends, neighbors and fellow community members.

The annual Make A Difference Day, sponsored by USA WEEKEND Magazine and Points of Light, is the largest day of community service in the nation. It is, according to its website, "a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Millions of volunteers from around the world will unite in a common mission to improve the lives of others."

Thousands of projects are planned each year involving corporations, communities, nonprofit organizations and individuals. In Manitowoc County, a pair of events will be highlighted.

The Manitowoc Sunrise Rotary, along with HTR Media will be hosting a Make a Difference Day event where 100 children who are in financial need and who need encouragement to get moving and exercising received registration (and T-shirt) to the Run with Rotary 5K on Oct. 19. This will be followed by those same children being invtied to the Y on Saturday for a sampling of activities available through the facility.

After children participate in those activities, they will receive a certificate of completion for the 5K and the event during an awards ceremony, a healthy snack, a voucher for athletic shoes and socks from Wal-mart, and a voucher for a six-month membership to The Y.

Also on Saturday, Friends of the Manitowoc River Watershed and volunteers will help plant dune grass into a newly designed beach dunes area at Red Arrow Beach in Manitowoc. Anyone wishing to participate can drop in anytime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Bbring gloves if you wish, but they are not necessary, and stay for as long as you can.

We wish there were other projects to report in our area. There are so many needs and, we know, so many good people willing to help meet them. Most of those participating in Make A Difference Day activities do it not for the honor (although there are awards and recognitions from the hosting organizations), but out of a genuine desire to help others in need. That is the spirit that launched Make A Difference Day more than two decades ago, and one that continues to this day.

Thank you for helping to make a difference in so many ways on Saturday. And remember, it is never too early to begin planning your project for next year. Visit makeadifferenceday.com to get started.
