We know what you're thinking? Why in the world would anyone plant a big ol' sunflower in the middle of a hanging basket? Well, Anna Mae Swanson of Green Bay didn't. She likely got an unexpected planting assist from a bird. But nevertheless, a striking focal point, don't you agree?

Mari Simon likes to plant plumeria so that she can feel tropical right here in Green Bay. It is, after all, a signature flower of Hawaii. The colorful blooms are strung together to make leis. Plumeria can be left outside as long as the temperature stays above 50 degrees, which means Simon has already tucked her plants in for the winter. They go dormant in her basement and thrive on neglect, getting just a modest drink of water once or twice throughout winter. 'The only time they tolerate a lot of water is during the heat of summer.'' And sadly, that's behind us — at least until next year. / Submitted

What’s in bloom by you? Send a pic of what’s flowering inside or outside your house to kmeinert@greenbaypressgazette.com with “Green Thumbs’’ in the subject line, along with your name, city and a line or two about it (how-to-grow tips are always welcome). Closeup shots work best, and no people in the photos, please.
