The Vikings' defense can be thankful Red Cashion is retired. The former NFL referee with his distinctive, drawn-out cry of "first dowwwn," might have become a major annoyance for a unit that is allowing opponents to move the chains as often as Minnesota.

While the Vikings' struggles at quarterback have been well-documented, the team's defense is off to one of its worst starts ever. There are at least three areas in which the club has been particularly generous: yards, points and, most notably, first downs surrendered.
