An elderly Fox Valley man with dementia was reunited with his family after being stopped by police for driving the wrong way on Highway 51.

The incident began a little after 7 p.m. Saturday when the man stopped in a town of Merrill bar to ask for directions to Little Chute, according to a Lincoln County Sheriff's Department report. After the man left, the bartender called the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department and said he was concerned about the man because the man seemed very confused. Shortly after that call came in, the department receive other 911 calls with reports of a car traveling the wrong way on Highway 51.

A Lincoln County deputy found a vehicle matching the description given by the callers, and the driver, a man from Little Chute, admitted to the deputy he had been going the wrong way, according to the report. The man's caregiver was contacted, and police were told the man was treated for dementia and had a license that restricted him to drive only in Little Chute.

Deputies cited the man for driving the wrong way on the highway and took him to a hotel at Tomahawk where he spent the night before his family picked him up on Sunday morning, according to the report.
