When general manager Phil Emery announced in January that he'd hired Marc Trestman as the Chicago Bears' new coach, he raised some eyebrows around the NFL.

Trestman was well known in NFL circles from his 17 years as an offensive assistant in the league, but he was an unconventional hire because he'd just finished his fifth season as head coach of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. He hadn't coached in the NFL for eight years.
