SHEBOYGAN - Oconto put itself on the board first, but couldn't keep up with Cedar Grove-Belgium once the Rockets finally got fired up.

The Central Lakeshore Conference's three-time defending champions flared to a 36-15 win after trailing by a touchdown through the first quarter in a Division 5 playoff opener on Friday.

"We played hard with a lot of heart, but lost to a very good team," said Oconto head coach Dave Ruechel.

Brisk winds and a stacked-against-the-run Oconto defense stymied Cedar Grove's usually well-balanced offense at first. The Blue Devil defense made a four-play stand after an early fumble and kept the Rockets'in check for the first quarter and a half.

"We were getting bits and chunks but making some mistakes," Cedar Grove coach Chris Zablocki said.

"Our kids adjusted to what they were bringing us ..." Zablocki added, noting the players "stuck to the game plan" and didn't panic despite falling behind early.

The Blue Devils opened up the game with a 12-yard touchdown run by Brandon Tousey, giving Oconto a 7-0 lead into the second quarter.

Defensive coach John Moe said Oconto's defense played some inspired football early, but a few mental breakdowns in coverage and some great throws by a very talented CG-B quarterbackk, put the team down 14-7 at half.

CG-B returned the second half kick off 73 years for a touchdown, and scored a 2-point `conversion.

"The defense could not bounce back and get many stops in the second half," Moe said. "The effort was surely there but Cedar Grove just executed better in the second half than the Blue Devil defense."

Conner Moe led the team in tackles with 13. Teague Camps chipped in with 7.

Corey Herbert led Oconto's rushing game with 22 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown. Herbert finished the game 6-of-13 passing for 66 yards.

"I am very proud of our effort by our players," Ruechel said. "After a 0-3 start, getting to playoffs took a team effort and a lot of work. I wish we could still be playing, but in the end we had a good season."

Oconto finished the season 3-3 in the conference and 4-6 overall.
