Washington Island Town Board reluctant about rifles for gun-deer hunt

Whether to allow the use of rifles during the upcoming nine-day gun-deer season was a discussion topic among members of the Washington Island Town Board at its meeting on Oct. 23.

Washington Island, unlike the rest of Door County, has traditionally permitted deer hunters to use only shotguns during gun-deer season. Rifles have been banned for deer hunting. A few hunters prefer muzzle loaders or handguns that shoot rifle cartridges, and these have been allowed.
