Ben Eidenschink and Alyssa Niggemann were out of breath, their cheeks rosy from the chilly day, but both were grinning ear-to-ear after their respective races.

Eidenschink, a junior on the Nekoosa/Port Edwards boys cross country team, and Niggemann, an Amherst sophomore, both finished sixth - Eidenschink in Division 2 and Niggemann in Division 3 - at the WIAA state cross county championships Saturday at The Ridges Golf Course.

The D2 boys race was a log jam at the first mile and still hadn't stretch out much at the two-mile marker, but Eidenschink was right in the thick of it until the end. ...
