DNA testing occurs in less than 1/3 of Brown Co. sex assault cases

Authorities send test kits in cases where suspects are charged, or offender unknown to victim

Sexual assault investigators often rely on DNA evidence from victim exam kits to aid in identifying suspects and solving cases.

However, local investigators don't send exam kits from every case to the state Crime Lab to be tested because of concerns about overloading lab staff. Local departments typically submit exam kits to the Crime Lab only if a suspect is charged, or if the victim does not know the offender.

The Brown County Sheriff's Department investigated 67 sexual assaults last year and collected 35 exam kits. But less than one-third of the cases investigated yielded DNA evidence ...
