The state Department of Public Instruction is investigating a principal who was recently fired from Nicolet Elementary School.

Melisa Ellingson was fired as principal on Oct. 16, according to the Green Bay School District. District officials sent a letter to parents saying Rebecca Swanson was named interim principal a few days later.

"As a district, we want to assure our families that at no time during Ms. Ellingson's employment with the district, was the safety or education of students and staff compromised," district officials said in a statement.

A district spokeswoman would not comment further. Ellingson was with the district since August 2011.

DPI spokesman Patrick Gasper said the state is investigating Ellingson for possible licensing issues. The DPI cannot comment until the investigation is closed, he said.
