Fire departments ban tobacco use among members

The Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department could soon be joining the list of departments that don't allow employees any use of tobacco products.

Stevens Point and Marshfield fire departments have had policies forbidding tobacco use in place since the 1990s. When people apply for the jobs with the departments, they must sign a document stating they will not use tobacco products.

"The job that we do is very rigorous," Stevens Point Fire Chief Tracey Kujawa said. "Smoking or using tobacco products would never be conducive to the job we do here." ...
