Kyle Willkom signs books.
On Sept. 27, I had the pleasure of attending the book launch party for Marshfield High School graduate Kyle Willkom in downtown Milwaukee.
Willkom hosted the event from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for several individuals who were instrumental in assisting him in development of both the book and his career path. He has authored "Wake Up Call: Five Essential Lessons They Won't Teach You in School."
Many of you probably know Kyle. He was an outstanding student during his time at MHS, and I don't mean just academically. Kyle was a talented basketball player and a very active member of my DECA Chapter. Kyle and his partner, Breanna Speth, earned the right to compete at the International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, Ga., for a project that earned more than $8,000 to benefit Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, research in honor of the late John Blankush.
After graduation, Kyle continued his education at Marquette University. During his four years on campus, Kyle and his friends earned quite a reputation as motivational rappers and musicians. All you have to do is search YouTube for the Spanish Odonnells to see what I mean. The group even teamed with former Marquette star Dwyane Wade to encourage team spirit for the Golden Eagles.
After several successful internships, Kyle was selected as the speaker for the College of Business graduation ceremonies at Marquette.
Kyle now works for FOCUS Training an interactive leadership development firm in Milwaukee. In his role as trainer, Kyle travels extensively throughout the U.S. He works with school and youth groups on team building and leadership skills. He has keynoted events for thousands of students. If you are interested in learning more about what Kyle or FOCUS Training does, please check out the website at www.focustraining.com.
Now about the book, "Wake Up Call." All I can say is amazing. The story focuses on a young man's challenge as his plans for college take an unexpected turn. Along the way he is given five essential lessons by influential individuals.
? Don't do stupid stuff.
? Take action.
? Have unwavering persistence.
? Serve others with a selfless heart.
? Choose to be happy.
Read the book to see how Dillon's (the main character) life is altered as he is taken on a summer-long journey to learn these five important life lessons. Be prepared for a shocking twist at the end.

Kyle has been an example, not only for my classes during the years, but to all of MHS and the Marshfield community. If you are a student, or in anyway involved in the life of a teenager, I encourage you to take the time to read this book. It is a short and easy read that just may have an impact on your life. Kyle is just one example of the many MHS graduates doing great things.
